In 1914, in Detroit, fittingly the same city that gave the world Henry Ford's assembly line, two men named Frank McCormick and J.W. Hinkle opened a business called the Automobile Laundry. Cars were pushed by hand through a narrow tunnel while three workers, each with one job, soaped, rinsed, and dried every vehicle that came through. It wasn't automated at all, despite the name, but it's considered the first business anywhere to call itself a "car wash," and it set the pattern every car wash since has followed: move the car through a sequence of stations instead of walking around it with a bucket.
It took another three decades for "automatic" to mean anything close to what it means today. In 1940, a car wash in Hollywood, California introduced a winch system that pulled the car through the tunnel instead of workers pushing it by hand, though people still did all the actual soaping and scrubbing themselves. Real automation followed in 1946, when an inventor named Thomas Simpson built a system with an overhead sprinkler and a powerful air blower, the same year a Detroit business called Paul's Auto Wash is widely credited as the first fully automated car wash in the world. By 1951, three brothers running a car wash in Seattle had added automated brushes and nozzles of their own, and the hands-free car wash as we'd recognize it today was finally born.
